Ginetta's Vendetta

Contemporary Jazz’s NEW Bad Girl

It’s always nice to get more of anything than you had anticipated. When I heard Ginetta’s Vendetta last fall at the jazz fest in Gainesville, Florida, I found myself remembering an occasion when I was a kid. I popped open my box of Cracker Jacks and there were two prizes inside the box instead of one. You know how that made me feel? … Yeah, in adult terms, like I had just won the lottery. And so it was with GinettaMinichiello, the multidimensional entertainer with a limitless supply of energy and versatility. She is a trumpeter, vocalist, composer, and a bandleader. I got four prizes instead of one this time … jackpot!

Minichiello began her musical odyssey in the third grade at the age of nine when she started playing the trumpet. “As soon as I held that horn in my hands,

there was never a doubt [in my mind] that I would become a professional musician.” After high school Ginetta moved to Manhattan. “It was a month after my 17th birthday. I spent a year and a half hanging out and sitting in, pursuing the business of music.” From the streets of

Manhattan to the halls of North Texas State University, Ginetta studied and played a variety of musical styles from classical, jazz, blues, pop and Latin to Russian folk songs. After which, she returned to NYC where she has been living and playing ever since. Ms. Minichiello has also been taught by trumpet masters Marky Markowitz, Spanky Davis, Ted Curson, Howard McGhee, and Allan Colin, just to name a few.

Minichiello honed her skills working alongside many greats too numerous to mention, which provided priceless experiences on and off the road, both in the U.S. and abroad. In the early days of her career, she played primarily Latin music and has toured Puerto Rico and parts of South America. A two-year stint at the biggest Russian club in New York, The National, was followed by three years on the road with the show band, Waterfront, covering the casino and hotel circuit.

Blues and Island music is also a huge part of Ginetta’s diverse musical palette. For years, she played with the legendary Holmes brothers, touring New England and Nova Scotia. She was also a steady sideman with Blues great, Albert Collins, when he played the Big Apple. Her penchant for Island music, Compa, and Calypso, led to gigs with Haitian super band, Phantom in and around New York and New England, as well as, a tour through Martinique and Guadalupe and a Carnival season spent in Trinidad and Tobago working with her female horn section, Amazon Brass.

Ginetta paid her dues and the time was right for this girl to step out of the shadows and do things her way. She wanted to sing, play, and compose. Thus, we have the incarnation of Ginetta’s Vendetta, which was formed seven years ago. The band operates on the power trio principle, bass, guitar, and drums, and defines her musical style as a jazz-funk-pop blend with island overtones. Her success has led to bookings from Beirut to Las Vegas & everything in between!

Minichiello is the recipient of three AscaPlus awards for songwriting and the Music Liberty Initiative for New York, a special grant for New York City musicians affected by 9/11. She has garnered three Billboard awards for her songs, Can Our Tears Put Out The Fire, Behind Those Eyes, and I Believe In You, which are available on her latest CD, La Dolce Vita, which just received the “Best of 2006” by soulpatrol website & newsletter.

Playing only the funkiest versions of jazz classics and singing her danceable originals, Ginetta commands any stage with her signature pocket trumpet, sultry vocals and professional pizzazz. She is one of the brightest rising stars on the scene today. As Ginetta says, “With my horn as my passport, there’s no place I can’t go to spread peace thru Music.
